Answering that question assumes understanding why we use the S & P 500 in the first place. While the Dow heavily favors industrial businesses — steel, chemicals, autos, oil and gas — the S & P 500 offers a more diverse representation. Also, the S & P 500 index is weighted by market value, which makes sense to professional investors. While certainly not a proxy for the S & P 500, it provides more exposure to other industries and stocks. As shown below, the equal-weighted S & P 500 has slightly outperformed the S & P 500 over the past 20 years.

That's over a 2000% gain, compared to 83% for the S & P 500. While the absolute numbers were uninspiring, the relative performance, versus the S & P 500, was even more discouraging. Of the 49 double-bagger-plus names, only 21, or 43%, outperformed the S & P in the next year, with 28, or 57% underperforming. It generally relies on earnings growth, often before those profits emerge, but eventually as the company's sustaining force. Does that mean buying NVDA is safe, because of that earnings growth rate?

The Jan. 31 session, which came after the first Big Tech earnings day, was tough. A non-stock devotee would be blown away by any of the following data points: In the fourth quarter , Meta grew ad volume by 21% year over year. Meanwhile, net sales for Amazon in 2023 hit $574.8 billion – a 12% increase from the year earlier. The above table illustrates the compound annual growth rate analysts expect for the mega caps, the S & P 500, and the 494 stocks excluding the Big Six. This compares to 20.3 for the S & P 500.

On several occasions, I would walk into Macy's and buy a tube of lipstick, which was something I found comforting. Considering that every lipstick I own, which is not a small number, is basically the same color, I also found that strange. For instance, rather than purchasing a new $400 dress, they might choose to buy a $35 tube of Lancôme lipstick. Let's look at the top-grossing concert tours in the U.S. this year. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Ed Sheeran have collectively sold $1.48 billion in ticket sales through August 2023, or $2.22 billion on an annualized basis, according to estimates from Forbes .

Alphabet shares are up 56% in 2023, but the stock still looks promising, according to Karen Firestone, CEO of Aureus Asset Management. "We still think it's very attractive," she said on CNBC's " Halftime Report ." "I think the amount of intelligence they have put into the search engine is phenomenal and that's just going to continue building," she added. Fellow "Halftime Report" traders Josh Brown, Sarat Sethi and Jim Lebenthal agreed that the stock still has strong prospects, even at this valuation. "This is the one tech stock that I'm overweight … It's attractively priced for a rapidly growing company," said Lebenthal, chief equity strategist at Cerity Partners.

These four are responsible for 46% of the 17% gain in the S & P 500 year to date. In 2003, the largest stocks – General Electric , Microsoft, Pfizer and Exxon Mobil – represented merely 4.4% of the total index market value. By 2013, the share commanded by giants Apple, Exxon, Microsoft and GE rose to 8.9% of the S & P 500. That's still below their 21% market value share, but it helps explain what investors are paying for: exceptional free cash flow and sustainable margins. The S & P 500 will struggle without participation from its biggest components.
